Carl L. Reistle, Jr., was born in Colorado and reared in Oklahoma. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, he began a career in Bartlesville, and gained an international reputation in the petroleum industry. With a Chemical Engineering degree from OU, he joined the U.S. Bureau of Mines and moved from Bartlesville to Wyoming, and finally to Texas. Early in his career he was a scientist and inventor, using his engineering knowledge and skill to develop improvements and innovations essential to the development of the petroleum industry. In the mid-1930’s he began a long association with the Humble Oil and Refining Company as engineer in charge of the Petroleum Engineering Division. He was ultimately named the company’s president and chief executive officer and was chairman of the board at the time of his retirement from Humble. Reistle served as past president of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers and was awarded its Anthony F. Lucas gold medal. The National Society of Professional Engineers named him “Engineer of the Year” in 1966 and seventeen patents for improvements within the industry bear his name.
