Biography
Oklahoma native Marilyn Harris attended Cottey College in Missouri and graduated with degrees in Fine Arts and English from the University of Oklahoma. She studied and practiced her craft after moving to Boston, Massachusetts, and returned to Oklahoma in the mid-1960’s. A series of her short stories was published in 1968 and her first novel, In the Midst of the Earth (1969) was followed by two juvenile novels, one receiving the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. That same year, Hatter Fox became a Literary Guild Selection with movie and paperback distribution rights. Her best-selling novels have since included The Eden Series of historical novels sold to British television and Lost and Found (1991), while 11 million copies of her books are in print. She was awarded the University of Oklahoma Literacy Award in 1970 and was inducted into the Professional Writers’ Hall of Fame in 1991.
Fun fact
Harris’ first work came at age six with the death of her pet cat. The event resulted in “Love Poem to a Cat,” which motivated several teachers to state that she was a born writer.
