Biography
Mary Alice Sitton Miller was born in Missouri and received her teaching certificates from the Business and Normal College in Fort Scott, Kansas, and Eldorado, Missouri. She taught in the Normal College in Afton, Iowa, before coming to El Reno where she taught eighth grade. After her marriage to Dr. Charles Miller, she devoted her time and energy to a wide range of club and philanthropic services including Order of the Eastern Star and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. She served as president of the Board of Stewards of the Methodist church and was an expert parliamentarian. She held several high offices in the Order of the Eastern Star including Worthy Grand Matron of Oklahoma Territory. She was greatly interested in young people and worked with the Rainbow Girls, where she held the office of Supreme Charity from its organization until her death in 1949.
Fun fact
Mary Alice Miller organized the first Young Men’s Sunday School class in Indian and Oklahoma Territorial jurisdictions.
Oklahoma connections
Miller came with her mother and siblings to settle near El Reno in 1892.
